Where exactly is Pantín Beach?
Pantín (also written Pantin) sits on the far northwest coast of Spain, in the Galicia region, within the municipality of Valdoviño. It’s roughly 40 minutes north of Ferrol and about 90 minutes by road from Santiago de Compostela.
This stretch of the Costa Cantábrica faces due north into the full force of the North Atlantic, which means it picks up every swell that rolls in from Greenland, Iceland and North America. The result is one of the most consistent wave environments in Spain — some surfers call it the most consistent beach break in the country.
You won’t find a big resort town here. Pantín is a small coastal village with fields, cliffs, and green hills rolling right down to the sand. That’s a big part of what makes it special.
What are the waves like at Pantín?
Pantín is a beach break, which means waves break over sandy bottoms rather than reef. This makes it more forgiving than reef breaks — better for learning, and generally safer when you fall. The beach offers A-frame peaks along its full length, producing both lefts and rights.
The main peaks
The western peak is an A-frame that works off the sandbank at the mouth of the Río Riomaior. The shoulder here tends to be mellow and long — perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers working on their turns. The eastern peak, tucked under the cliffs, is the one that hosts the Pantín Classic pro competition. It handles serious size, stays clean in easterly winds, and delivers some of the best performance waves in the country when a big northwest swell arrives.
Nearby spots worth knowing
Pantín is the main event, but the surrounding area has more to offer. Baleo is two minutes down the road and handles different swell directions, staying rideable when Pantín closes out. Valdoviño beach, 4.5 km to the southwest, is another open beach break with multiple sandbars. A Frouxeira, a bit further north, offers left and right-handers and is often less crowded.
At Ondas Novas, we don’t stay at one beach — we check conditions every morning and take our students to whichever spot is working best that day.
When is the best time to surf in Pantín?
Pantín works year-round, but the experience varies significantly by season.
| Season | Months | Conditions | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar – May | Groundswells tapering off, variable winds. Uncrowded. Water cold (13–14°C). | Intermediate and above; empty lineups |
| Summer | Jun – Aug | Smaller, cleaner waves. Warm weather. Crowds peak in July–August. Water up to 18°C. | Beginners, families, first-timers |
| Autumn | Sep – Nov | Peak season. North Atlantic storms deliver powerful, long-period groundswells. Weather mild. Water still warm. | All levels — the sweet spot |
| Winter | Dec – Feb | Big, powerful swells. Can be epic. Often stormy. Water drops to 13°C. | Experienced surfers only |
The sweet spot is September to November. The North Atlantic storms begin delivering powerful groundswells while the weather stays mild and the water is still relatively warm. October in particular is considered the best single month — clean, rideable waves occur more frequently than at any other time of year, and after the Pantín Classic the crowds thin out fast.
What wetsuit do you need to surf in Pantín?
Galicia is not the Mediterranean. The Atlantic water stays cold even in summer. Here is our local recommendation:
If you book a lesson or coaching session with Ondas Novas, your wetsuit and board are included in the price. We make sure you have the right equipment for the conditions on the day.
Is Pantín good for beginner surfers?
Yes — Pantín is one of the better beginner surf destinations in Northern Spain. The beach break means a sandy bottom and waves that generally allow for long, readable rides rather than the sudden, hollow breaks you get on reef. In summer the wave size is manageable and the conditions are forgiving.
That said, Pantín can be powerful. On days with solid northwest swell it is not a beginner beach. This is why having a local instructor who reads the forecast matters so much — at Ondas Novas, we choose the right spot and the right time for your level every single day.
Ready to book a surf lesson in Pantín?
Ondas Novas surf school is based in Valdoviño, minutes from the best surf spots in Galicia. Small groups (max. 6 people), personal coaching, video analysis, and pick-up from your accommodation. Lessons from €45 per person.
Pantín and the surf competition world
Pantín’s reputation isn’t just local. Since 1988, the beach has hosted the Pantín Classic Galicia Pro, one of the most important events on the World Surf League Qualifying Series calendar in Europe. Every August, the world’s best young surfers come here to compete — and thousands of spectators come to watch.
For our students, this is genuinely motivating. You surf the same beach that WSL athletes warm up on. You stand in the same lineup. That’s not something you get at a beach resort that happens to rent surfboards.
How to get to Pantín
By car (recommended)
A car gives you full flexibility to follow the best conditions across the coast. Pantín is well-signposted from the AP-9 motorway. Driving times: from A Coruña about 1 hour, from Santiago de Compostela about 1 hour 30 minutes, from Ferrol about 40 minutes. Free parking is available on the road above the beach.
By public transport
It’s possible but takes planning. From Ferrol, buses run to Valdoviño. From Santiago, take the train to Ferrol then a bus. If you book with Ondas Novas, we offer pick-up from your accommodation so you don’t need to worry about it.
Nearest airports
- A Coruña Airport (LCG) — 42 km, about 45 minutes by car. Multiple daily connections from Madrid and Barcelona.
- Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) — 85 km. More international routes, including connections from London and Frankfurt.
Where to stay near Pantín
There are no big hotels on the beach itself — and that’s by design. Pantín is protected and largely undeveloped, which is part of its appeal. Accommodation options nearby include:
- Rural houses (casas rurales) around Valdoviño — a very Galician experience, often with gardens and local food
- Small hotels and pensions in Cedeira or Ferrol, both within 30–40 minutes
- Campsites near the beach in summer
- Surf-oriented accommodation such as Siete Playas Surf House, close to both Pantín and Valdoviño beach
Having a car makes the whole trip significantly better — it lets you follow the conditions, explore the coast, and catch the best tide windows without depending on bus schedules.

- Pick-up included: No car? No problem. We collect you from your accommodation and bring you to whichever spot is working best that day.
